Library Get Started 2022

Library for Educators
3 min readJun 30, 2021

The Library’s Teaching Learning and Student teams will offer a range of support as part of the wider Library Get Started initiative. This year, the offer includes asynchronous resources which can be embedded into a Blackboard space, and where appropriate, synchronous Get Started Presentations for Schools. Please note, module level synchronous induction requests will not be available this year.

In this post you will find an overview of the Get Started offer, core topics, delivery methods, how to request support and connections to Central WIT events. Our aim is to provide key information on Library services, resources and support to prepare students to start their studies.

To make a request, please use the Get Started request form linked at the end of this post. We will get in touch to then discuss options as to how we can best support your students. We ask that you give us three weeks notice before the due date.

Core topics:

For Welcome/Induction/Transition

The Library will focus on delivering information on the following topics:

  • Library services (My Learning Essentials, My Research Essentials, Specialist Library Support)
  • Introduction to key Library staff and sites
  • Access to Library resources

Delivery methods:

Asynchronous

Asynchronous delivery methods and resources will be the default. The Library’s Get Started resource can be embedded into any Blackboard space, it provides students with all the information they need to start using the Library.

In addition, the Library has over 40+ online resources that cover a range of topics and levels of interactivity. These are all available to be embedded into Blackboard spaces when necessary.

The Library’s asynchronous materials include:

  • Podcasts
  • Videos
  • How-to tutorial blog posts
  • Downloadable handouts and supporting materials

You can look at our Library Get Started content here.

Synchronous

In addition to asynchronous resources which students can access whenever they need them, we can also provide synchronous Get Started Library sessions at a programme level.

Synchronous sessions can include activities such as:

  • A Q&A focused on specific pre-selected topics for a programme/specific cohort.
  • A tailored set of activities that connect asynchronous materials to specific induction topics or events (ie small group sessions focusing on practicing and exploring a specific skill or topic).

Connections to Central WIT events

The Library will deliver Get Started Library drop-ins online and there will be a Get Started Space on campus as a part of the wider University WIT activity. These events will be an opportunity for students to ask questions and find out more information about Library services and support.

11th — 15th September: Pre-arrival week
18th — 22nd September: Welcome week
25th — 29th September: Induction and transition phase

Students will be able to access asynchronous resources through our Get Started webpages.
